Driving licence translation in Vienna

If you want to use your driving licence in Austria or abroad, you must have it recognised (converted). For this purpose, you require a certified translation in order to be able to submit the conversion to the authorities. In EU countries, there is no conversion obligation, but if you would like to have an Austrian driving licence, it is possible to obtain one by having it converted. An international driving licence issued outside the EU is not valid within the EU in many cases and should therefore be translated. To avoid costs, first try to have your international driving licence converted at the relevant office.

Driving licence translation into German

If you have been resident in Austria for more than six months, you must have your (non-EU country) driving licence converted, as after six months the driving licence will be declared invalid. To obtain an Austrian driving licence, you require a certified translation as well as a subsequent driving test for most non-EU countries. If you are a resident of Vienna, you can apply for a new driving licence with our certified translation at the Road Traffic Licensing Department at Dietrichgasse 27, 1030 Vienna.

Driving licence translation into a foreign language

Most countries will accept a certified English translation of your driving licence, which you carry with your original licence. However, it is advisable to translate the document into the respective official language of the destination country so that it can actually be understood by everyone. You will be on the safe side if you contact the respective consulate of the destination country or embassy or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before commissioning the translation, as each country has its own requirements for different certificates and documents. Our certified translations are perfectly adequate for most countries inside and outside the EU, and you therefore will not need any additional supplementary certification. Only in rare cases will you need to obtain supplementary certification of your translation from the respective country's consulate or embassy in Austria, even for EU countries.

Come to our office with your driving licence or send it to us by email and we can provide you with proper advice thanks to our many years of experience.
